What Does the Periodontist Treat?

A periodontist is a dental specialist focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease and other conditions affecting the supporting structures of the teeth, such as the gums, bone, and connective tissues. They are experts in managing periodontal disease, ranging from mild gingivitis to more severe forms like periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Periodontists also perform specialized procedures such as scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), periodontal surgery, and gum grafts to restore the health and function of the gums.

Periodontal Disease Will Not Go Away by Itself

Taking action early is the best way to keep your gums healthy. Gum disease can often be managed with techniques like scaling and root planning, which remove harmful plaque and tartar. If ignored, it might progress to the point where surgery is needed to save your teeth. At New You Dental Center, we focus on early intervention and effective treatment to keep your smile bright and healthy. Our experienced team is ready to address your concerns and provide the care you need.

To determine if you have gum disease, assess its severity, and recommend the appropriate treatment, our periodontist will:

  • Review your medical history
  • Examine your month to look for plaque and check for bleeding.
  • Measure the pocket depth
  • Take dental X-rays
