Gum Disease Treatment
Our dental office in Lansing, MI offers periodontal treatment to help patients with gum disease. Our periodontists have helped patients of all ages manage and treat various stages of periodontal disease, ranging from gingivitis to advanced periodontitis.
What Does the Periodontist Treat?
Periodontists are dental specialists who focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and other conditions affecting the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament. They are trained to manage a range of periodontal issues, from mild gingivitis to advanced periodontitis, which can result in tooth loss if not properly treated. Periodontists also perform advanced procedures such as scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), periodontal surgery, bone grafting, and gum grafts to repair and restore the health and functionality of the gums and supporting structures.
Periodontal Disease Will Not Go Away by Itself
Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that will not resolve on its own. Early intervention is crucial to prevent further damage to the gums and underlying bone. Non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing can be effective in the early stages to remove plaque and calculus from below the gum line. However, if the disease progresses, more advanced surgical interventions may be necessary to preserve the teeth and surrounding tissues. At New You Dental Center, our team focuses on early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment to maintain optimal oral health. We are committed to providing personalized care to address all stages of periodontal disease.
To determine if you have gum disease, assess its severity, and recommend the appropriate treatment, our periodontist will:
- Review your medical history
- Examine your month to look for plaque and check for bleeding.
- Measure the pocket depth
- Take dental X-rays
Symptoms of Gum Disease
Sensitive Gums and Teeth
Gum Recession and Loose Teeth
Dental Abscesses
Bleeding, Red or Swollen Gums
Bad Breath or a Persistent Bad Taste
If you have one of the above symptoms, it’s important to visit a specialist. Periodontists are highly trained in diagnosing and treating gum disease. After completing dental school, a periodontist undergoes an extra two to three years of advanced education specifically in the care and management of gum tissue and related conditions. This specialized training equips them to handle complex gum issues effectively and help maintain overall oral health.
