Dental bonding and contouring are less invasive cosmetic treatments that effectively fix small imperfections in your teeth, such as filling in chips, covering stains, and perfecting the shape of the teeth. In dental bonding, your dentist applies a composite resin material that matches the natural color of your teeth. The tooth is lightly etched to ensure the material bonds well. Once the resin is placed, your dentist carefully shapes it to match the natural form of your tooth. A curing light hardens the resin almost instantly. Afterward, the surface is polished for a smooth, natural finish. Unlike veneers, which require the removal of a thin layer of enamel, dental bonding is minimally invasive and restores the tooth’s appearance without removing healthy structure.

1

Quick and Natural-Looking

Dental bonding is a fast procedure that typically takes just one office visit to complete. Your dentist applies a tooth-colored resin to the affected area, carefully shaping and polishing it to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. The result is a restoration that looks completely natural and enhances your smile without the need for complex or lengthy treatments.

2

Durable and Long-Lasting

The composite resin used in dental bonding is designed to withstand daily wear and tear. While it may not be as hard as a crown or porcelain veneer, the material is durable and resilient enough to last several years with proper oral hygiene and care. Bonded teeth can handle normal biting and chewing forces. Although not as resistant to extreme pressure as porcelain, the resin performs well in most non-molar applications, particularly in low-stress areas. Regular brushing, flossing, and avoiding habits like chewing on ice or hard objects can extend the lifespan of the bonding. The material is also less prone to staining than natural teeth but may still discolor over time.

3

Non-Invasive

Unlike other cosmetic treatments such as veneers or crowns, dental bonding does not require extensive removal of tooth enamel. The procedure preserves the natural structure of your tooth, making it a minimally invasive solution. No anesthesia is usually required, and the process is painless, making it ideal for patients who prefer a more conservative approach to dental improvements.

4

Correct Various Tooth Imperfections

Dental bonding can cover tooth discoloration that doesn’t respond to whitening, repair chips and cracks, close small gaps between teeth, and even improve the shape or length of teeth.

Consultation is Essential

Our dentists will conduct a dental exam, which may include X-rays, to assess the condition of your teeth and gums before determining the need for dental bonding. Factors we will consider include:

  • The health of surrounding teeth and gums
  • The location, size, and type of cosmetic imperfections, such as chips, cracks, or discoloration
  • Whether bonding will meet your cosmetic goals

Patient Education

How long does it take to get dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a relatively quick procedure. Typically, it takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. If you are having multiple teeth bonded, the appointment may take longer or require more than one visit.

How long do dental bondings last?

With proper care, dental bonding can last between 5 to 10 years. The longevity of the bonding depends on factors like oral hygiene habits, the location of the bonding, and avoiding habits such as biting nails or chewing on hard objects.

Will my dental insurance cover the cost of bondings?

Dental insurance may cover part of the cost of dental bonding, especially if it is considered necessary for structural repairs (such as fixing a chipped tooth). However, if it is purely cosmetic, many insurance plans may not provide coverage. It’s best to check with your specific provider to understand your benefits.

Can I use HSA or FSA for dental bondings?

Yes, you can typically use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for dental bonding if it’s deemed medically necessary or part of restorative dental work. It’s important to confirm this with your HSA or FSA provider for specific eligibility details.
